The New Restive Ranger

February 26th, 2009 1 comment

“I tell you right now — there will be some bumps” John Tortorella

When thinking of the NY Rangers and the on-goings at the club these days, you can’t help but think of, and be reminded of, that awkward kid in the early teens that suddenly; from being a shy, reticent kid, unexpectedly turns up at school with spiked hair and a new in-your-face attitude to accompany the outward image transformation. Yet, you know, below the hairdo and whatever /gothic/punk/indie/ style that happens to be in fashion at the moment and accompanies the makeover; beneath this polished shell is still that self-conscious little kid that gets pushed around a lot by the big bad bullies.

Self-confidence is at a premium when it comes to the New York Rangers these days. Especially when it comes to scoring goals and picking up points, which of course is at the very core of the fundamental nature of the professional game.

Appointing John Tortorella, after the cautious Tom Renney, is a desperate move to try and transform the team’s fortunes on the ice and make the playoffs – despite the recent abysmal form. The Rangers want a new image; a less hesitant defensive and a more aggressive offensive style. It may work, it may not. Either way; New York is in for a bumpy ride with the emotionally involved and expressive Tortorella behind the bench. There will be no yawning when he’s around and the players will quickly find out that times have changed: “They are going to be held accountable,” John promises.

While the Rangers’ fans may be delighted to get a coach that blends so effortlessly in to a big city mind-set and the New Yorker mode; they must also be aware that if Rome wasn’t built in a day – neither was what once went under the name of New Amsterdam. He’ll need some time to evaluate his players, find what makes them tick and push those buttons and get them firing on all cylinders – before the playoffs disappears in the rearview mirror.

“There may be some conflict along the way, but I don’t think we should be afraid of conflict” John Tortorella

John is a restive character and one that certainly isn’t afraid of heated altercations and clashes of personality. It can get him in trouble, and at times seemingly losing control of the dressing room, but it can equally egg on and lift players to play a more adrenalin fueled brand of hockey. Without a doubt this is the kind of play that Tortorella is accustomed to and prefers to employ, as he’s also quick to affirm: "I have always liked the pressure game so we are going to try to pressure and we’ll see how our guys can handle it".

A criticism that sometimes is thrown in Tortorella’s direction, with some sense of accuracy it must be said, is that he is a somewhat one-dimensional coach. There isn’t much of a B-plan always; or a different path to success with John. It’s his way – or the highway. Or at least that’s how it used to be. Maybe he has gained some wisdom from last season’s failure with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He has definitely had some time to dwell on that letdown anyway.

Certainly it seems to be what he is alluding to when acknowledging that his preferred tactic doesn’t work for all teams; a lesson he learned the hard way by his own admission: “I have to be careful because I made a major mistake last year with our team in Tampa where I was too aggressive and our ‘D’ couldn’t handle it and it cost us”.

On the other hand it helped the Bolts lift the Stanley Cup back in 2004, so if the circumstances and team-chemistry is right; this could possibly be a good fit for the Rangers and a winning formula. But, that remains to be seen – as of yet.

What also remains debatable is if this is a major change of direction – a shift in hockey philosophy for the Rangers, or merely a makeshift makeover. Desperate times call for desperate measures they say, and this seems to fit snuggly in to that category. It will be interesting to watch how this gamble pans out. For now, it’s a case of ‘he who lives to see – will find out’….

Baby Steps

Yesterday, John Tortorella made his debut behind the Rangers’ bench (although he did have 4 as a caretaker coach back in 2000) and came away from Toronto with a precious point. Even so, Tortorella won’t be satisfied and would most certainly have wanted two for their troubles. As often is the case with a new manager who wants to change things in a radical new direction; the first baby steps can be a bit crude and wobbly, but will improve with time and practice. Unfortunately for John he won’t be given much of that precious commodity as a hectic schedule descends upon the NY Rangers.

Next follows the crucial home bow against fellow playoff hopefuls the Florida Panthers. This will truly be John’s baptism through fire. Having been Tampa Bay’s head coach for so many years; it will be a familiar meeting for him with an undertone of seething animosity. Expect John to be animated behind the bench and scolding his players if they don’t give it their all.

The importance of the game is clear to everyone; neither team can afford to lose pace on one-another or drop points to the chasing pack; headed by Buffalo, Carolina and Pittsburgh. Only three out of these five playoff contenders will eventually make the post-season. It is likely that this chase will go down to the wire – and a point or two – may very well be all that separates them in the end.

Whether or not John Tortorella can be the difference-maker for the Rangers – we will soon see, but the challenge before him is a massive one and not one for the faint-hearted. It’s a pot-holed course that will swing all sets of supporters from hope to despair; but it is games and challenges like these, which make hockey fans – players and coaches – itch with anticipation for each and every game. John will no doubt play his part in the unfolding drama and will make it just a little bit more colorful of a spectacle, for us all.

Who needs Sean Avery, after all, when you have John Tortorella behind the bench?

Pre-playoff Action in the East

February 12th, 2009 1 comment

The Florida Panthers players, staff and fans are in the midst of gearing up for an epic combat in Raleigh this evening. The eighth spot is up for grabs and whoever wins the contest will set themselves in pole position, as we enter a hectic and very thorny stretch of games here in February for the Cats and the other playoff hopefuls.

Neither combatants saw action last night, but there were skirmishes elsewhere with massive implications for the Eastern Conference playoff race. Let’s take a look at the results and standings to see what the repercussions are for Florida.

New York Islanders @ New Jersey Devils 2-4

The Islanders put up a good fight, especially their goaltender MacDonald saved any potential blushes with an impressive performance. However, the Devils proved too good for the New Yorkers and especially Langenbrunner and Parise continued their goalscoring ways with two each; winning the game for New Jersey 4-2.

This shouldn’t have too much bearing on Florida as New Jersey look far too classy to ever get involved in the playoff race, they are more comfortable up-front among the Divisional leaders.

Washington Capitals @ New York Rangers 4-5 SO

The big story here was that Washington defenseman Mike Green continued scoring (2) to tie the record consecutive goals scored for a defenseman in the league. Nonetheless it proved not to be enough for the Caps as the Rangers – for the ninth time this season – prevailed in the shootout. If they ever do make the playoffs they owe a debt of gratitude to goalie Lundqvist who keeps winnings those shootout challenges for his team. Another positive for Rangers was that they finally managed to score some goals(!)

Disappointing for the Cats as we would have hoped a dejected Rangers side would show up here in Sunrise tomorrow and that we then would be able to rise past them in the standings. Yet, by getting another shootout win in New York, it should see their confidence levels markedly increase and it will now be another tough game for the Panthers. No one seriously doubts at this moment in time that Washington won’t win the Southeast Division and qualify for the playoffs, but they can nonetheless not afford to start relaxing quite yet.

Chicago Blackhawks @ Atlanta Thrashers 3-1

The Atlanta Thrashers are of course dead and buried as far as the playoffs are concerned, but they did put up a massive effort against the Hawks and only an stupendous string of saves from Khabibulin could stop them from winning this game. Chicago are not as comfortable away from home, but have now strung together some nice victories on this latest 8 game road trip they’ve been on.

Blackhawks will grace the Bank Atlantic Center ice next Thursday, and looking at this result it will be a tough game for the Panthers. They are young, hungry and aggressive – it will certainly be a good test for Florida to see how well we match-up with the better Western teams. As for Atlanta the best they can wish for at the moment is getting that No.1 draft pick this summer…

Ottawa Senators @ Buffalo Sabres 3-1

The Sabres were let down by their bungling power-play and could not get enough pressure on the Ottawa net to score plural goals and win this game. The Senators meanwhile had a good game as their top-line was in the mood to play. That is not always the case, but when they are – Ottawa win more often than not. Shame for them it happens at a point in the season when it doesn’t really mean that much; the playoffs remains firmly out of the Senators reach.

Ottawa win one for the books and Panthers fans will be delighted. This means we are merely two points behind the Sabres with two games in hand! Also, it must be mentioned, the loss of top-scorer Vanek for several weeks will be a very tough blow to Buffalo’s hopes of making the post-season. But then again that is the risk you take as a club if you are too dependent on one or a couple of players to perform. Maybe Ottawa should take some notes here…

San Jose Sharks @ Pittsburgh Penguins 1-2 SO

After affirming their Stanley Cup credentials against Boston (5-2), the Sharks came up empty handed against a more desperate Penguins side. It was a goalie match-up that went all the way to a shootout; were Crosby scored the winner on Sharks goaltender Boucher. Both netminders had spectacular games between the pipes, but it was Fleury that claimed the bragging rights at the end of the tiebreaker.

Not good for Florida as the Sharks again let us down badly. They have now in short time lost both against Carolina and Pittsburgh and San Jose have certainly not been helping us in the playoff-scramble one bit. (Maybe it is there revenge on us for beating them earlier in the season…) Anyway, Pittsburgh win and put themselves within a point of the Panthers, but with more games played. The Penguins may prove to be a difficult team to shake off; which makes it all the more important to beat Carolina and catch up with Buffalo tonight.

Montréal Canadiens @ Edmonton Oilers 2-7

Montreal’s woeful trip to the Northwestern parts of Canada continued with another hammering; this time against Edmonton. In truth the Oilers just had one of those days were all the pucks bounced their way and the Canadiens couldn’t get any breaks whatsoever (especially not the poor goaltender Price). Nonetheless a disturbing loss if you are a Montreal fan – hoping for centennial celebrations at the end of this year. The Oilers meanwhile put themselves back in to the playoff contention in the West with this win.

Losing seven straight games on the road is not the way to get yourself in to the playoffs, and indeed, Montreal may now be on the way of not only getting embroiled in the playoff race – but also slide down to the wrong side of the standings if nothing changes dramatically and soon. This is good news for the Panthers as it means we have another team locked in sight that we can catch up with – and pass – down the stretch.

The Playoff Race Tightens Up – Eastern Conference

February 5th, 2009 2 comments

Entering tonight’s game versus the NHL’s worst team when it comes to collecting points, the NY Islanders, Florida’s playoff hopes are being squeezed amid unrelenting challenge from the teams around us in the standings. So, getting the Islanders monkey firmly off from the Cats back – would be an, as a good start as any.

The Islanders enter the contest with a season high of four straight wins, including a 3-1 triumph over the Panthers at Nassau Coliseum last Saturday. Now at the Bank Atlantic Center the Cats will be hoping to repeat a 2-0 victory on home ice from earlier this season. The New Yorkers are 2-1-0 against Florida, so it will be a tighter affair than the standings might give the impression of.

Tight is also the word of choice when describing the Eastern Conference playoff race. Florida is sandwiched between the likes of Buffalo, Carolina and Pittsburgh with Montreal, NY Rangers and Philadelphia currently staying out of the mid-table-mash. Yet, that could quickly change: The clubs involved in the race are stepping up their game and teams currently not embroiled in this chase could quickly be caught up with, if they let up on the gas.

Rangers are currently on a three game losing streak, and only picked on point from Atlanta’s visit at the Garden. Philadelphia have likewise struggled, of course losing after the All Star break against the Panthers, but have also lost their last two games. Montreal meanwhile bounced back after their Floridian defeats by slamming the door on the Penguins nose in the Canadiens last match.

Since the Panthers’ thrilling overtime victory against the Maple Leafs, other teams in the Conference were and have been active with the following results:

While we would expect the Hurricanes to be blown away in San Jose tonight, yesterday’s victories for Buffalo and Pittsburgh makes it important to collect both points at stake from the Islanders today. Next follows a tricky trip to in-form Washington on Saturday and after that we entertain the Maple Leafs on Tuesday; before going on a tough trip to Raleigh next Thursday for a crunch match with Carolina. Then follows that fantastic, yet fantastically difficult, stretch of home games again top opposition; Rangers, Capitals, Devils, Blackhawks and Bruins. The month is then rounded off for the Cats with a road trip to Boston, New York (Rangers) and New Jersey.

February will most definitely prove a difficult month for the Panthers and we need to accumulate any points we can to get a little buffer – in case the upcoming schedule proves a little too hard a nut to crack. The Islanders, despite recent form, should be one we can break and collect two invaluable points from. If, that is, the Panthers feel like it is a game that deserves their full attention and participation – both mentally and emotionally (unlike in the last two meetings).

The New York Islanders is, believe it or not, the most in-form team at the moment in the Eastern Conference with four consecutive wins; closely trailed by Washington and Boston who have three respectively. Tampa Bay Lightning has, after that great stretch of victories, become the out-of-form side numero uno with four straight defeats – although one point was salvaged from yesterday’s trip to the steel city. They are followed by the NY Rangers and Ottawa Senators with three, while Philadelphia and Toronto have lost their two previous games.

Here are the current standings for the Eastern Conference, heading in to tonight games:

Senators Make Coaching Change

February 2nd, 2009 2 comments

The Head Coach merry-go-round in Ottawa continues as Craig Hartsburg has been relieved of the duty as of today. Binghampton Senators coach Cory Clauston will be the new inter-rim coach. Meanwhile assistant coach Curtis Hunt has also been let go from Ottawa, but given the chance to move to Binghampton instead.

Ottawa Senators General Manager Bryan Murray expressed his regret that the team has been unable to perform this season. He said that the club had high expectations going in to the season and when things started to turn sour early on “we hoped there would be change in our performance [but] it didn’t happen.” [Quote from the Ottawa Sun]

The Ottawa owner Eugene Melnyk had hoped the team would make the playoffs this year, but as that has increasingly become a pipedream; something had to give. Murray said that a reason for making this coaching change was “to find out the level of performance this group is capable of. Is it what we’re playing like now, or is it what we’ve seen out of a lot of these players in the past?” [Quote from The Fourth Period]

That of course remains to be seen. However, with the players available to the Head Coach it is perhaps not unreasonable to expect a serious playoff challenge. Being so far behind already and the cumulatively dismal performances by the Senators made a change seem inevitable. Ottawa isn’t exactly famed for its patience with coaches either. In the last year they will now have had four different coaches behind the bench.

While it is easy to blame the Head Coach, it is reasonable to try and bring someone else in and see if indeed it is a coaching problem or a player/team chemistry problem. If it is the latter the club of course needs to know this and make the necessary changes amid playing staff and rebuild the roster. If this turns out to be the case, and the new coach Clauston can’t get the team playing as a team, one can expect Ottawa to be heavily involved by the trade deadline; moving veteran/star players for draft picks and prospects.

Considering it was just the year before last that the Senators were in the Stanley Cup Final, this turn of events must be mystifying to many; especially considering the roster hasn’t changed all that much. But then again maybe that is, in itself, at the heart of the problem.

Nonetheless, it is trying times in Ottawa and Clauston is set for one enormous uphill challenge – to try and turn things around in the Canadian capital.

No Room to Err

January 29th, 2009 2 comments

A couple of Panthers threats to that eighth spot, and beyond, were in action yesterday as the race tightens further. Making the playoffs will be a momentous task for Florida, but on the bright side we have fate in our own hands – with plenty of home matches and games to spare on the closest opponents. Winning against Philly was a great scalp, coming out from the All Star break, but there is no room for error as all teams get in to playoff mode.

The Panthers were hoping from more helping hands from Rangers, after they beat Carolina in their previous game, before taking last night’s trip to the steel city. Sidney Crosby returned from injury for the Pittsburgh Penguins and stated assertively that the playoffs start here. And a playoff game it was as the Penguins and Rangers were locked in crunching action. It was tied at one going in to the third period, but then the scene exploded and Pittsburgh ended up winning the period 5-1, and the game 6-2.

Pittsburgh finally started playing as a team and Captain Crosby deserves some credit for this revitalization. He had four points on the night, including a spectacular backhand shot – buried deep in to the top corner. Kris Letang also contributed with timely goals (2) and Florida need to take the threat posed by the Penguins seriously. We all know the level of talent in the squad and what they are able to do on their day (after all they were Stanley Cup finalists just last year). Level on points as us, but with a couple of games more played; who would bet against the Penguins making the playoffs? Not me.

All the more important then to catch up with the Sabres, and perhaps one of the other teams ahead of them, if we don’t want to bite our collective Cat claws all the way down the wire in April. Buffalo played again yesterday in Northwestern Canada, this time in Calgary. The Flames were well warned following Sabres 10-2 undressing of the Oilers the previous night and turned out to be too hot to handle for the visitors. The home side formed a different challenge entirely and there was always an element of control in their 5-2 win. Mike Cammalleri scored a hattrick and former Panther Todd Bertuzzi chipped in with the game winning goal, as it later turned out to be.

Good news for Florida that the Sabres finally lost, and so; we have a chance tonight to move within one point of them by beating the Canadiens – who are on a three game losing streak – sitting merely eight points ahead of us in the table. A win tonight and they too are within striking distance. Montreal’s last loss, their first after the All Star festivities, came at Tampa Bay, losing 3-5.

Whilst most Panthers sneer contemptuously at what the Lightning have been up to this season, fact is that they’ve won their last three and have been in scorching form since the Christmas break. They are now eight points out of the playoff race, but if they can continue to keep up their play at a consistent top-level and get the star players to continue shining; we can’t yet count them out of the race either. Later today they travel to North Carolina for an important game against the faltering Hurricanes. With the teams respective in-form-temperature-gage going in opposite directions, it remains uncertain what result would be best for the Cats. But of utmost significance – is that it doesn’t become a three point contest.

Elsewhere highflying Bruins entertain the red-hot Devils, whilst at the bottom the Thrashers entertain the Islanders. Ottawa and Toronto travel west for games against St. Louis and Colorado respectively. None of these games are expected to have any immediate effect on the Panthers, but as we next head to New York to meet the Islanders; an eye might be glanced at their direction to assess their current form: After all there are no easy games and we did lose that last time we played in the Nassau Coliseum on New Year’s Eve.

So, with all the action elsewhere and all the possible outcomes of those contests, the most important one is indubitably the game we play inside the Bank Atlantic Center. We are 0-2-1 against the Canadiens this season and need to change those statistics. A win would be priceless, but will undoubtedly come at the price of a sizeable Panther effort; all players need to perform tonight!

Hopefully Thomas Vokoun can continue his solid ways between the pipes – it will be necessary. We also need a couple of pucks bouncing our way whilst remaining unyielding at the back – as there is no room to err in a tight game as this will almost certainly be; and with Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and Buffalo doing what they can to take the playoffs spots up for grab away from us – the Panthers must defend what we currently have with every drop of blood and sweat available.

Bust or break, it’s now or never; if we are to realize our playoff dreams and ambitions!

Panthers Cause Given Helping Hands from Around the League

Eastern Conference Update

Despite having not played since last Saturday, the Panthers playoff hopes have been bolstered by the results elsewhere. The other teams in the race have gone on a sudden losing streak and the path is now wide open for Florida. Of course we still need to keep on winning our games to have any chance whatsoever, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to see the likes of Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Carolina being harassed for points.

Last night it was the Sabres and Penguins that tripped up; losing against Chicago and Washington respectively. Pittsburgh continued its losing streak at home to the Caps, 3-6. This after having won their previous game away to fellow Pennsylvania rivals Philadelphia 4-2. We can only hope the Flyers defeat was the start of a losing streak – as they sap some sunshine here in Florida – and hopefully come away with a nasty nose burn for their troubles…

Buffalo’s downturn has perhaps not been as spectacular or well documented as the Penguin nosedive, but is been quite noticeable nonetheless. Yesterday they went down to the Blackhawks, losing 4-1, despite drawing first blood in the game. The Sabres have lost some bite and lost 4 consecutive games; 2-4 vs Ottawa, 1-2 vs Rangers and 1-3 at Detroit before being blown away in Chicago. Next on their current western road trip is a stop at a resurgent Dallas, who’s stars are showing loud mouth Sean Avery where the game is played; on the ice – rather than off it.

Fellow South Eastern rivals Carolina meanwhile, where knocked off their groove by the Panthers a week ago and are still reeling from the two-four punch. Since then they’ve lost two consecutive 1-5 games; against Boston and Ottawa respectively. Unfortunately they now look set to get things back on track, as they host a confidence bereft Maple Leafs team, tonight. This should be the perfect time for the Hurricanes to let off some steam and get points on the board; before going to Buffalo on Saturday.

Apart from these three teams that are within immediate striking distance of the Panthers in the standings, there is also the New Jersey Devils in sixth spot to keep an eye on. They won their last outing in Vancouver 5-3 and host a strapping Columbus team tomorrow, before entertaining the marooned Islanders on Saturday. A boost for the club is the signing of veteran forward Brendan Shanahan, which was at last confirmed yesterday. The Devils continue to steal points and might be a tough task to catch up with, but a sixth place could be very valuable in the long run for Florida – in so far as avoiding the top two teams in the Eastern Conference playoff (likely to be the Bruins and Capitals) – who both look like true contenders for the cup.

Yet, here we are, going ahead of things again… First things first and the Panthers must focus their full attention on the upcoming double-headed-feature against the Flyers and Lightning, before turning attention to playoff rivals Buffalo on Monday. As fans however, we can afford the luxury of drifting in to the future a little and get lost in playoff reverie. So far we are getting some very supportive and helping hands from other teams around the league – and let’s hope that continues…
