A Positive Line

April 3rd, 2009 1 comment

Three straight and rather unexpected victories – after the preceding poor spell – have brought the Panthers back into playoff contention. It’s back to scoreboard watching! And as claimed in my previous post it is the Rangers, and not the Canadiens, we should be eyeing. The New Yorkers have the tougher schedule of the two and the shoddier form at the moment. This breakdown was confirmed yesterday as both teams were in action.

The Montreal Canadiens secured two points by beating bottom dwellers NY Islanders comprehensively 5-1. The Habs now jump into seventh, much thanks to their greatly improved powerplay – which yesterday resulted in 3 goals. Since Mathieu Schneider re-joined Montreal and Saku Koivu returned to good health; the Habs powerplay has suddenly become lethal and free-scoring. Just at the right time too!

This while the Islanders may not shed any tears for their loss against the Canadiens – after all – what’s losing a game if it hurts your worst rivals’ chances of success? Together with a third period collapse by the Rangers themselves in Raleigh, it means the New Yorkers are down to eighth – only two points ahead of the Panthers, who have a game in hand.

Florida could finally count on some help and surprisingly it came from our Southeastern rivals Carolina. The Hurricanes caught the Rangers napping in the final period and scored two unanswered goals to win the contest 4-2. The win means Carolina have won seven in a row – overall – and the last ten home games; a new franchise record.

Winning at home is what the Panthers will be seeking to do tonight. With the NY Rangers in striking distance; the game against the Atlanta Thrashers becomes all the more important.

But, here’s a warning; don’t underestimate the Georgians! They have acted as spoilers in the latter part of the season and have done it very well; scoring goals in bunches and upsetting may-a-team down the stretch. Last it was the Sabres that lost in a shootout that effectively ended their realistic claims for a playoff spot. Atlanta would love to do the same to the Cats…

So, while the Florida Panthers have been handed a lifeline by the NY Rangers’ loss, it will mean nothing if we lose tonight. It’s all hands on deck, keep shuffling those boards and pumping shots at goal!

The Cats now the secret to their own success and it is all about team-play and hard work. Step away from that proven line of success and the Thrashers will burn us, make no doubt. This is all a mental game at this stage of the competition and the Panthers need to show some poise and gusto – to pick up the spoils from this contest.

Trickier games are around the corner; Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Washington, so the Atlanta games are indeed must-win contests….

Game Action Pix vs. Carolina

March 24th, 2009 Comments off

Game action pictures from yesterday’s game versus the Carolina Hurricanes. It was a thriller of magnificient proportions, with both teams battling and creating a plentitude of goalscoring opportunities. It may have not been the biggest crowd at the Bank Atlantic Center, but it was rocking all the way through this emotional rollercoaster of a game.

Here are 10 frozen moments from this ‘game of the year’.

Horton Eyeing Rival Return to Action

March 20th, 2009 Comments off

Nathan Horton has been out with a lacerated ring finger since the St. Louis game, on the 7th of March. He was projected to miss 2-4 weeks after the following surgery. He is now back on the ice practicing and is eyeing a return to playoff race action on Monday – when the Panthers host the Carolina Hurricanes in a Southeastern Division match-up that could go a long way in determining both clubs’ post-season futures: In or outside of the playoffs.

“I shot some pucks today and it felt all right,” said Horton on the Panthers official website. “(Saturday) I’ll try to do the same thing and skate with the team, then see the doctor in the afternoon and, hopefully, if everything goes well, I’ll be able to play on Monday, because it’s a big game.”

A big game it is for sure! And Horton has been sorely missed during his absence; in the 5 games he’s been out injured the Panthers have only managed to win one.

Nathan Horton will miss 2 to 4 weeks after surgery and his points will be sorely missed by the Panthers down the stretch.

Nathan Horton is back on the ice after his ring finger surgery and is eyeing the crucial playoff game against Carolina on Monday as his return date to action..

He’s a big body with an excellent wristshot and generally good hockey vision. He’s been playing as a centerman this season, but is considered a natural right winger by trade. Considering this, and his 38 points on the season, it must be said he’s having a decent year. He certainly has a role to fill on the team anyway; as long as he continues to apply himself – the way he was prior to the injury.

Sometimes Horton has had a knack of disappearing in games and sporting a lackluster look. Fans have for this reason knocked Nathan about a bit and always seem to expect much more from him. During this year’s new look Panthers he has however started to find his way and when applying grit and determination to his trade; Horton is a very capable hockey player indeed.

His return bodes well for Florida’s playoff hopes.

Blow Me Away!

February 13th, 2009 2 comments

So this is how fifth heaven looks like?

(Hey, if there is a seventh tier there must be a fifth – if logic were to prevail, right?)

We the southernmost hockey-fans in the land have not been spoiled rotten with hockey success, rather starved and left wanting, and so we will take all the more in pleasure in this triumph against our perennial rivals…

5-0! Say it again: Florida = a high flying five; Carolina = none, zip, zilch, zero, nil, nought, nothing – null and void *leave empty space here* not even one – shutout in their own house!!!!! Taste it, savor the flavor of sweet victory; and in Carolina nonetheless… If all Hurricanes were as friendly as the one we met in Raleigh yesterday… By all means, take me for a spin around the North Carolinian wilderness anytime – blow me away!

OK… exhale – take a few deep breaths – a moment of sanity is needed to recollect just how this stunning victory came about in the first place…

The game started in an open fashion with both teams circling around one-another looking for an opening. The Panthers were the first to find a gap in the first period as a joint two-way forecheck by Horton and Booth presented the puck to Ballard, who confidently stepped in from the slot, feigned the slapshot and fed the puck to Horton – who in turn was presented with an alluringly amount of empty net to aim at – and he made no mistake.

That was, believe it or not, the winning goal – after a mere 7 ½ minutes played of the game…

Minutes later a similar forechecking move by the same line presented Richard Zednik, stepping in un-marked from the line, with an excellent opportunity to give Florida a 2-0 lead. Cam Ward made the first save on Zednik’s shot, but Richard got the puck right back to him and jammed in home on the second time trying. Both goals were a real testament to coach Pete DeBoer’s tactics and how they can yield results if the forwards keep playing aggressively in the opponent’s zone; maintain high pressure on the defenders and in-so-doing create turnovers around the boards.

Yet, this was no walk-over. Carolina stood their ground well and over the course of the game had no less than 42 shots on goal. Several of those were qualified chances and a couple were open netters. The difference between the teams was first and foremost the goaltending.

Cam Ward was replaced by Michael Leighton half way through the contest after letting in four goals on thirteen shots. This while Tomas Vokoun continued his outstanding form by fending off any and every shot directed at him with poise and composure. He never looked rattled and the defenders were always there to dispose of any loose pucks around the crease. A special mentioning in that respect must go to Karlis Skrastins, who acts as the proverbial broom; sweeping up goal-bound shots and rebounds – as if he’s somehow magnetic and all pucks want nothing else then to come to the Latvian iron-man.

What really punctured Carolina and any lingering hopes of a comeback was however Anthony Stewart. He’s been playing with so much energy of late that you just couldn’t help but think a puck must finally bounce his way – and in goal. This, at long last, happened in the second period as two Carolina players collided; presenting Stewart with an open pond to skate in to – and to everyone’s collective surprise he scored a beautifully cheeky goal in Ward’s considerably wide five-hole. And you just knew that when Anthony scores it’s one of those days of Midas when everything you touch turns in to gold – and in this case – goals.

Prior to Stewart’s three-nothing goal, the Hurricanes had had a couple of power-play opportunities and were swirling around Vokoun’s net in search for a way back. The goal therefore came at a very opportune moment and you could see the Carolina players literally fold after Anthony’s rare moment of glory. The mental collapse was quickly exposed as the Panthers scored again – barely 12 seconds later. It was suitably the CPR line that put the game to bed after Gregory Campbell scored in rapid succession of Stewart’s deflating goal. A despondent Cam Ward was now withdrawn from the game in favor of back-up Michael Leighton.

Further gloss to the scoreline came only minutes later as Michael Frolik, who has been going through a dry spell of late, pounced on a ricochet from a rapid Kamil Kreps strike, which hit the cross-bar and bounced straight to Michael. Frolik had his stick on the ice and reacted quickly to put the puck away behind Leighton in goal.

After this 5-0 goal it was merely a question of waiting for the game to end for both teams. Carolina were frustrated and no one more than Eric Staal who took a couple of stupid penalties in the third. However, by this point any lingering hopes the home team may have had earlier in the game, of getting a share of the spoils, were long gone anyway.

While Vokoun was the obvious match-winner with his shutout, this was truly a team victory for the Panthers. The defenders ably dealt with any rebounds and kept the Hurricanes forwards at bay. The Florida forwards meanwhile, had a lot of success with its aggressive forecheck and especially the first line of Booth – Horton – Zednik showed how it can be used to full effect in those first two goals. The fourth line has been playing very well and with a lot of energy for quite some time now and has finally started to get rewarded for all that hard work. Frolik got out of his recent slump with a goal and the CPR-line (Peltonen – Campbell – Dvorak) can always be counted on; both for defensive solidity and forward production. The penalty kill was also of the highest order yet again.

If the Florida Panthers can keep their focus and play the way they did yesterday; making the playoffs doesn’t look all that intimidating anymore. However, it’s important we stay a bit grounded nonetheless – a very tough schedule is coming up with no less than 9 (!) consecutive games against teams currently above us in the standings. It will be a stern test of the Cats resolve coming up; starting later today with a home tie with the New York Rangers.

It’s dangerous to speculate or look forward too much, but imagine if we can beat the Rangers tonight… That would take us to within one point of NY – currently in fifth spot of the Eastern Conference. Now isn’t that a remarkable change of fortunes for a team that was dead last in the league just a couple of months ago!

It does put in to perspective just what head coach Pete DeBoer has actually managed to do with, what on paper looks like, a rather modest set of players and inherent skill within the squad. Yet, we can’t let up now. The Panthers need to dig even deeper to get through this upcoming set of games victoriously. And now it’s truly time for the people of South Florida to start rallying behind this club: The players are working their hearts out, but will need that seventh player more than ever as we enter a very tricky six game home stretch, starting today.

We can all make a difference and sound our support to the players on the ice doing the deeds. It’s time all South Floridians woke up and took notice of the heroics being done here; got in to the action laded thrills and spills of hockey and once again embraced the Panthers.

I for one will be at the Bank Atlantic Center tonight, cheering for the Cats in thick and thin: Where will you be?

No Room to Err

January 29th, 2009 2 comments

A couple of Panthers threats to that eighth spot, and beyond, were in action yesterday as the race tightens further. Making the playoffs will be a momentous task for Florida, but on the bright side we have fate in our own hands – with plenty of home matches and games to spare on the closest opponents. Winning against Philly was a great scalp, coming out from the All Star break, but there is no room for error as all teams get in to playoff mode.

The Panthers were hoping from more helping hands from Rangers, after they beat Carolina in their previous game, before taking last night’s trip to the steel city. Sidney Crosby returned from injury for the Pittsburgh Penguins and stated assertively that the playoffs start here. And a playoff game it was as the Penguins and Rangers were locked in crunching action. It was tied at one going in to the third period, but then the scene exploded and Pittsburgh ended up winning the period 5-1, and the game 6-2.

Pittsburgh finally started playing as a team and Captain Crosby deserves some credit for this revitalization. He had four points on the night, including a spectacular backhand shot – buried deep in to the top corner. Kris Letang also contributed with timely goals (2) and Florida need to take the threat posed by the Penguins seriously. We all know the level of talent in the squad and what they are able to do on their day (after all they were Stanley Cup finalists just last year). Level on points as us, but with a couple of games more played; who would bet against the Penguins making the playoffs? Not me.

All the more important then to catch up with the Sabres, and perhaps one of the other teams ahead of them, if we don’t want to bite our collective Cat claws all the way down the wire in April. Buffalo played again yesterday in Northwestern Canada, this time in Calgary. The Flames were well warned following Sabres 10-2 undressing of the Oilers the previous night and turned out to be too hot to handle for the visitors. The home side formed a different challenge entirely and there was always an element of control in their 5-2 win. Mike Cammalleri scored a hattrick and former Panther Todd Bertuzzi chipped in with the game winning goal, as it later turned out to be.

Good news for Florida that the Sabres finally lost, and so; we have a chance tonight to move within one point of them by beating the Canadiens – who are on a three game losing streak – sitting merely eight points ahead of us in the table. A win tonight and they too are within striking distance. Montreal’s last loss, their first after the All Star festivities, came at Tampa Bay, losing 3-5.

Whilst most Panthers sneer contemptuously at what the Lightning have been up to this season, fact is that they’ve won their last three and have been in scorching form since the Christmas break. They are now eight points out of the playoff race, but if they can continue to keep up their play at a consistent top-level and get the star players to continue shining; we can’t yet count them out of the race either. Later today they travel to North Carolina for an important game against the faltering Hurricanes. With the teams respective in-form-temperature-gage going in opposite directions, it remains uncertain what result would be best for the Cats. But of utmost significance – is that it doesn’t become a three point contest.

Elsewhere highflying Bruins entertain the red-hot Devils, whilst at the bottom the Thrashers entertain the Islanders. Ottawa and Toronto travel west for games against St. Louis and Colorado respectively. None of these games are expected to have any immediate effect on the Panthers, but as we next head to New York to meet the Islanders; an eye might be glanced at their direction to assess their current form: After all there are no easy games and we did lose that last time we played in the Nassau Coliseum on New Year’s Eve.

So, with all the action elsewhere and all the possible outcomes of those contests, the most important one is indubitably the game we play inside the Bank Atlantic Center. We are 0-2-1 against the Canadiens this season and need to change those statistics. A win would be priceless, but will undoubtedly come at the price of a sizeable Panther effort; all players need to perform tonight!

Hopefully Thomas Vokoun can continue his solid ways between the pipes – it will be necessary. We also need a couple of pucks bouncing our way whilst remaining unyielding at the back – as there is no room to err in a tight game as this will almost certainly be; and with Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and Buffalo doing what they can to take the playoffs spots up for grab away from us – the Panthers must defend what we currently have with every drop of blood and sweat available.

Bust or break, it’s now or never; if we are to realize our playoff dreams and ambitions!
