Veteran Trio Bolster Cup Hopefuls

January 12th, 2009 1 comment

Signing proven veterans to bolster teams hopeful of contending for the Stanley Cup trophy is not a new tactic, but a proven one. This season has already seen a triplet of spectacular returns to the National Hockey League:

Mats Sundin signs with the Vancouver Canucks. The most talked about was of course ex Toronto captain Mats Sundin who, after a much protracted search for a new home, finally settled on Vancouver. With Sundin’s established leadership and skill, the Canucks can look forward to some interesting times come the spring. In addition to this big name signing they also added some depth to the goalie department by acquiring Jason LaBarbera from the Los Angeles Kings. He will add some competition to the spot while Roberto Luongo remains out and could fill in case of future emergencies or simply when Luongo needs a break between the pipes. These signings should help keep Vancouver fresh this spring, and with perhaps another signing or two, they could be true contenders this season.

Claude Lemieux returns to Hockey with the Sharks.

The most sensational return however, was by 43 year old Claude Lemieux. The four time Stanley Cup, and Conn Smythe, winner – signed a deal with San Jose Sharks and will begin playing with their AHL affiliate Worcester Sharks. This to get him in trim after a five year absence from Hockey. He will bring a considerable wealth of experience when called in to action for San Jose – come the playoffs. He is expected to be called up after the March 4 deadline, when rosters can swell to 23.

“I didn’t go into this thinking I’d be on the top line or dominate or lead the team in playoff scoring, but I still think I can bring a lot as a role player,” Lemieux recently told the Edmonton Journal.

Undoubtedly he will bring valuable experience to the table, but will he still have the legs to keep up with opponents, or has perhaps time passed him by? Only time will tell.

The latest veteran to make a return to the league was Brendan Shanahan. Brendan Shanahan signs with the New Jersey Devils.Originally he had hoped to get a spot with his beloved Rangers, after his contract expired at the backend of last campaign, but finally had to give up as the New Yorkers couldn’t find any space or cap money for him. After taking his time it was finally the New Jersey Devils that came away with his signature. The 40-year old is expected to bring home a contract worth $ 1.5 million, earning just under half of that sum. General Manager Lou Lamoriello of the Devils said yesterday; that a contract would be worked out “in the next couple of days.” As the above mentioned veteran players, he’ll bring a wealth of experience to his new club. Certainly his arrival will be a real boost for the Jersey hopeful.

However, question is if the team won’t need more reinforcements, than merely an ageing Shanahan; if they want to be seen as legitimate contenders…

The Long Awaited Debut

The question is, will Sundin play tonight?

Since being signed as a free agent on December 18, 2008, there has been much speculation when the Swede would make his first appearance as a Canuck. That day seems to be near, as the coach has made room for Sundin to join the line up by sending Jannik Hansen to Manitoba of the AHL.

Being out of the game for 9 months must add some uncertainties as to when the ex-Toronto captain will be back on the ice. But Sundin is a professional, having been the second-longest active serving captain in the NHL, will certainly not dissapoint, as he has expressed on the team’s site: "I’m looking forward to getting back playing the game, but at the same time I want to make sure I’m ready physically so that I can stay in the lineup and not come back too quick and get hurt or anything like that."

Surely his new team mates are eager to find out just what Mats Sundin has to offer on the ice. We shall see, possibly tonight, how he will find his rhythm and what he will bring to Vancouver NHL Hockey.

Sundin A Canuck

Well, there you go! A final twist to the saga; Sundin opted to go against the bookies and select Vancouver as his next Hockey destination. The Canucks will surely be delighted and suddenly see themselves thrown into the playoff picture as an outsider with a real chance of contending for Lord Stanley. Expectations will surely skyrocket…

They have made an excellent acquisition and Sundin should fit well in to the fold. Especially considering there are already several fellow Swedes starring in Vancouver.

Maybe his stellar career will also have one final twist. Having never won the Stanley Cup surely this must be his greatest challenge yet…

The Approaching Storm

If only one were to dream for a moment…

…imagine Mats Sundin skating into the Bank Atlantic Center, with his sheer size and wall of experience taking on the challenge of leading the Panthers toward the long awaited playoff picture. Leading the club in to what is normally considered post season for Panther fans. He would be the perfect leader; the robust and rousing center forward Florida craves. The leader who could teach the promising Panther cubs (Frolik, Matthias etc) how to play.

But, this is of course a pipe dream and Sundin looks set to sign for either the NY Rangers or Vancouver sooner rather than later. Panther fans would however hope he decides to go to the other side of the Canadian border. His record against the Panthers is devastating and (unless he suits up in a Panthers jersey) the less we see of him the better of course. This especially since we’ve recently gained the upper hand on the Rangers.

Panthers-vs-Hurricanes

Vancouver was the destination for the Florida Panthers this last weekend; winding down from an impressive Canadian road trip. Unfortunately the momentum was broken and the Panthers declawed. Now it is of utmost importance to re-establish the winning mentality when visiting the Canes tonight.

Not only are they fierce rivals and competition for that elusive playoff spot, but frankly, the Panthers need to break the Hurricane curse. 14 out of the 15 last games in Carolina have ended in the hosts celebrating victory. With stats like that it will always be an uphill battle to make the playoffs. While the Panthers have enjoyed some successes of late, the Hurricanes have gone through some turbulence. Peter Laviolette was replaced by his predecessor Paul Maurice and a resurgent Carolina have started to find their Hockey feet; beating Montreal 3-2 on Tuesday.

With these two teams desperate to win, all seems to be set for a real firecracker tonight! To come out on top is of utmost importance to both teams and subsequently one team will risk losing momentum and perhaps also that essential ingredient; confidence. With Vokoun expected to start the game and some top liners returning – the Panthers have no excuses. This is a real test and one they must pass. Players need to realize the importance of this game and come flying out of the blocks. The playoff race begins in earnest today…

…and if again we were to dream for just a moment; imagine the Panthers taking control of the game from the first faceoff and then using all that frustration from seasons past to fight down the approaching storm. Remerge in triumph and glimpse at the horizon; the sun rising over the state of Florida Hockey.

Anything is possible if you can dream it and Panthers fans have for far too long been required to be dreamers; now is time for the club to wake up and realize its potential.

Sundin’s Challenge

Mats is truly a big player - in every respect - and any team would be happy to have him.

Ever since becoming a free agent in July, a long lasting saga has been unfolding at the fringes of the NHL. Firstly the question was “would Mats Sundin retire or keep on playing?” Time dragged on during the summer and no answer was forthcoming. Finally toward the autumn he set his sights on a comeback. Working out in Los Angeles, getting back in to shape, the rumor mill soon started to pick up speed.

Vancouver Canucks were quick out the gate, offering a reported $ 10 million salary and a two year deal. With the shortlist shrinking down from ten teams, only two now remain: Vancouver and NY Rangers. While the Rangers are an attractive offer for any veteran Hockey player; their salary offer is “only” reported to be between $ 5-6 million. They also need to free up some space under the salary cap. Perhaps moving several players in fact; Petr Prucha and Dan Fritsche may not be enough to get the Rangers back in under the salary cap. While Vancouver would seem like the more comfortable offer and is a pleasant city on the Canadian Pacific, they still come up short of the Big Apple when it comes to City drawing power.

Indeed, according to the Fourthperiod.com reports indicate that Sundin would prefer the New York Rangers. With a deal seeming imminent, the Rangers would be forced to set in motion their planned roster moves. Whilst roster moves may stir up some emotions – on the bright side they end up with an experienced leader and goal scorer; someone who could be invaluable for the Rangers in a potential playoff. Sundin’s agent J.P. Barry indicated on NHL.com that Mats might be ready to report for training by the 27th and is fully fit to do so.

There is still time for further twists and turns in this tale, but for now the NY Rangers seem to be in the driver’s seat and soon enough the NHL will have another star back ready to do battle. Winning a first Stanley Cup, or at least having a fighting chance, must be motivation enough for Mats to give it another try at least.
