Panthers Back to Chasing the Playoff Pack

March 20th, 2009 Comments off

After having, temporarily, been hooked off from the playoff race; the Panthers are right back in the mix again. Beating Toronto, to sweep that series for the first time in franchise history, 3 goals to 1, the Cats could also count on crucial help from GM Jacques Martin’s former club in Ottawa. The Senators, who beat Buffalo in their last game, handed another defeat to the drunk-punch Montréal centennial celebrators. Ottawa won 5-4 and handed Florida another lifeline.

The Florida Panthers remain in ninth, but are now a mere point behind both Carolina and Montréal, whilst trailing Rangers two. The Cats have the same amount of games remaining as the NY Rangers and Canadiens, but one in hand on the Hurricanes. To add to the equation is that the Panthers will play both Carolina (Monday) and Buffalo (Wednesday) in crunch games that could very well decide the playoff fate of Florida. The Sabres are now four points to our rear, but have one game in hand on us – and could still get back in to the chase from their current jettisoned position in tenth.

Last night’s home fixture against the Maple Leafs was, despite what coach Peter DeBoer may have claimed to the contrary, a must win game. Lose that match and they would effectively have lost sight of the other teams ahead of them. That did however not happen and Florida swept away the visiting Ontarians once again. It was the Toronto native Stephen Weiss that, once more, proved to be the vital difference between the two sides.

Stephen Weiss is having a record point year and has developed into a key players for the Panthers, especially against his native Toronto. He now has 8 points in fours games against the Maple Leafs.

The Panthers started slowly, but when Radek Dvorak was erroneously put in the box for holding; the Cats woke up with a vengeance. None more so than Weiss, who took the puck past the Toronto defense with a speed and guile – that left the Maple Leafs defenders sprawling on the ice. He finished off the move with a backhand in the top corner behind the unaided goalie Martin Gerber.

The visitors came back at the end of the period however and punished Richard Zednik further for an undisciplined high sticking retaliation – to a clean hit from Jason Blake. Mikhail Grobovski was left all alone between three Panther players in the deep slot area (however that is possible!?) and made no mistake; ushering in the tying goal, just two minutes before the break.

Florida came out flying in the second period and looked determined to take the game to the visitors. And that they did. Richard Zednik made amends for his lapse in judgment in the first period and slotted home the leading goal, 6:21 in to the period. He displayed the coolness of a clinical goalscorer and found a tiny passage beneath Gerber – and the puck obliged him by merrily trickling in over the line.

The home side now had their tails up and 1:27 after Zednik’s goal, Radek Dvorak danced around scrambling defensemen to feed Ville Peltonen, who meanwhile had camped out just to the left of the crease, and Ville unperturbedly collected the puck with his skate, stickhandled his way past a dizzied Jeff Finger and somehow found a hole by the post to beautifully slot home the 3-1 goal. Martin Gerber couldn’t have been happy to let that goal in and after that he played much better and didn’t let any more pucks pass him by.

Tomas Vokoun on the other end had a quietly solid game, not letting up any rebounds and making some big saves in the third when the Maple Leafs pressed forward. Overall this was a well performed game by the Panthers, but in truth, this was also a game you would expect them to win. Toronto is in the midst of experimenting with youngsters and rebuilding for next year. If Florida couldn’t win this game, let’s face it, they would have no right to claim a playoff berth in the first place.

Nonetheless, it was a crucial victory and hopefully one that finally instills some sense of calm and confidence in to the squad. Yet, we are still on the outside looking in and there are no let-ups. The games will be coming increasingly hard and frequently at the players and they need to be, or get themselves in-to, playoff mode – already. The stretch will be a tough one for all teams involved in this race and any slip-up could ultimately come back to haunt the clubs at end of regular season.

Next for the Panthers is a rare visit by the Columbus Blue Jackets tomorrow. Columbus is equally in a playoff chase, but find themselves in a very enviable position at the moment. This because they have been playing some very good hockey of late and it looks increasingly like the Blue Jackets will be making a first playoff appearance in franchise history this spring.

It will in other words be a tricky game for the Panthers, but we have done well against Western opposition so far and hopefully that can continue on Saturday. It should be a good game anyway!

A Rare View of the Cats and Hawks in Sunrise – and Helsinki

February 19th, 2009 2 comments

Yes, the Chicago Blackhawks are coming to town and it will be a rare sight for Panthers fans to see the skills of Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Brent Seabrook – and all the other highly skilled Chicago youths – on display. Next year the match-up between the two teams will take place in Helsinki, Finland, so if you want to see the Cats vs. the Hawks live – you’d better get out to the Bank Atlantic Center tonight, or you’ll have a long wait to the next opportunity…

It had been rumored for quite some time that next year’s game between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Florida Panthers would take place in Europe. At first it was thought the game would take place in the Czech Republic; and considering the amount of Czech players with the Panthers – that would perhaps have made more sense, but now it is official that the game will take place in Finland’s capital Helsinki instead. Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues meanwhile, will play a regular season game in neighboring Sweden.

It will mark the first time the Panthers play outside of North America. The Blackhawks on the other hand played an exhibition game at Wembley Stadium in London, England, back in 1992 versus the Montreal Canadiens.

There is a sense of excitement among the comments from Florida’s staff and players alike about the prospect of playing in Europe, but no one is more excited than the Cats’ veteran Finn – Ville Peltonen – who said on Panthers’ website:

“They will pack the stadium and there will be a buzz around the city. They’ve been waiting for a game, a regular-season game, to be played where there are points on the line. It will be totally different than just playing an exhibition game. Fans will appreciate what the NHL is doing.”

This will be an incentive as great as any for Ville to decide to keep on playing beyond this season and sign a new deal with the Panthers, one would think. He is currently the only Finnish player in the squad and one of several UFA’s at season’s end.

So, in other words, if you want to see the Panthers vs. Blackhawks you’d better get out to Sunrise for tonight’s match-up. Chicago will come to the Bank Atlantic Center brimming with confidence after beating Tampa Bay Lightning 5-3 and winning seven of their last ten games. They are currently 4th in the Western Conference with 72 points in 55 games.

The Blackhawks placed C Patrick Sharp and G Nicolai Khabibulin on IR yesterday. Sharp leads the Hawks in goals, 23, while Khabibulin leads them in wins, 17 and a .924 save percentage. They will be missed for the game against the Panthers, but Chicago are blessed with plenty of depth and Cristobal Huet will take the goalie spot as his; while Jonathan Toews (20), Patrick Kane (18), Martin Havlat (19) and rookie Kris Versteeg (16) all have the ability to cause havoc around the crease. In fact, Chicago has 10 players with more than 25 points on the season – with sophomore Kane leading the way with 51 points.

Chicago has established themselves as a top team in the NHL again this season after several years in the doldrums. They have a young and energetic team, a quick and high scoring defense and very skilful forwards that can outmaneuver any team on their day.

The Panthers will have their work cut out, but if they can beat the New Jersey Devils the way they did on Tuesday; they can certainly defeat the Blackhawks also. Either way, this is an eagerly anticipated game that no true South Floridian hockey fantast would miss for the world…

I certainly, literally, can’t wait!!

Comeback Cats Stun the Bolts

January 18th, 2009 Comments off

Panthers are on the prowl!

FSN Florida’s play-by-play announcer Steve Goldstein frequently uses the phrase “the comeback cats” to describe the metamorphosis that the Panthers have gone through from previous seasons. Last year the Cats never seemed able to claw themselves back from adversity or overcome deficits, but this season it’s been a different story altogether.

Trailing a goal or two, as we did both yesterday and the day before (versus Tampa Bay and Philadelphia respectively), used to be reason enough to head for an early night’s sleep. Florida rarely, if ever, managed to stage such comebacks – in fact – going in to the third period with a couple of goals ahead; would not even that be a reliable guarantee of points. This has all changed this term. With character players and veterans such as McCabe and Stillman on the team, the Panthers may be down – but never entirely out of the contest.

The Panthers, after five days off from competitive hockey, started slowly both against Philadelphia and Tampa Bay; going two goals down in the first period against both those adversaries. Friday’s comeback against the Flyers salvaged a point, after losing the ensuing shootout, and yesterday’s game against the Lightning went a notch better – claiming all the spoils. And it was two very important points. It sends the Cats into eighth spot in the Conference; claiming a playoff berth at this moment in time.

It may not have been a beautiful win, as Florida Head Coach Peter DeBoer readily acknowledged after the game, but the steely resolution on display from his team, heralds a promise of better times ahead. The Panthers looked sluggish from the previous day’s shootout defeat to the Flyers and lost the first period, 3-1, much to the hometown supporter’s glee. The only goal scored by the Cats was by Gregory Campbell, which was a positive omen in itself for the visitors; as when he has scored this season – the Panthers have always got at least a point in compensation.

Florida Panthers stage another comeback, win 4-3, vs Tampa Bay Lightning. This game was no exception to that rule. The Cats came out hungry and started the second period by chasing the Bolts around the rink. The energy applied soon reaped its due reward, with Cory Stillman scoring on the visitors’ first power-play opportunity. By staying out of the box this period, the Panthers could roll their four lines and put pressure on Tampa’s weak backline; turning the game on its head and the hosts on their back feet.

Especially Nathan Horton, who up until this point had looked hesitantly hapless and lethargic – suddenly burst in to action. He was the one who fought for possession, and claimed the puck, so that Stillman could pick it up and discharge it into the top of the net. Horton got an injection of confidence from the play and assisted on the next two goals also. The game leveler was scored by Richard Zednik, who jabbed home a loose puck in front of the crease through sheer will of determination. The game winning goal was shot home by, recently prolific goal scorer, Jay Bouwmeester – with merely tenths of a second remaining of the second period. The third was period played out as cagy 0-0 contest.

The Bo goal and game winner was scored on a power-play; the best possible settling of scores – as Evgeny Artyukhin was penalized for an unclean tripping on Ville Peltonen. At least that was the official call from the referees. The television pictures however showed a very different story. It was a deliberately dirty challenge by the big Russian; which purposely targeted Peltonen – with the conscious effort to maim the opponent. Mission accomplished; as Ville struggled to get back on his feet and is now out with a lower body injury.

It remains a mystery how the officials could miss this blatant foul and how Artyukhin could be allowed to continue to play, after a measly two minute penalty. It was a career ending kind of tackle – that has no place in hockey; the NHL commissionaires must come down hard on this kind of behavior to set a firm precedence. Florida Coach Peter DeBoer said after the game: "It’s a dirty hit. […] We’ll let the league decide what they’re going to do with it." Whatever they decide, fact is that these actions aren’t, and cannot be tolerated within the game; it is a much worse offense than the much talked about badmouthing by Sean Avery and the penalty must reflect this clearly.

Evgeny Artyukhin on the lunge again. The only reason Artyukhin literally got away with murder on the ice, was the naivety of the referees. Perhaps not accustomed to players faking injuries – so that they won’t risk being penalized (unlike professional soccer where this is a common occurrence and is less likely to fool the hardened umpire), Artukhin successfully played hurt in order to gain sympathy from the officials – and only ended up getting the two minute tripping call. It is unfortunate, but replays clearly show the degree of the offense, and subsequent theatrics, and we can only hope the league will set a forceful precedence; in order to avoid any such future travesties.

However, the significant consequences of this incident are, and remain, that Ville will be out for an unknown period of time and that the Panthers scored the goal which won us this important game. 4-3 was the end result and next follows an imperative game against the Sabres on Monday at the Bank Atlantic Center.

Having now moved into eighth spot, Florida trail Buffalo with only two points and can take a decisive step toward the playoffs – by beating them on home ice. With the mental strength and aptitude displayed, so far in to the season by the Panthers, I for one wouldn’t bet against them winning on Monday. It’s another all-important test for this year’s “comeback Cats” and let’s hope they pass this one as well.
